When a Suspicious Object is Located
Since last week's newsletter, an unfortunate incident occurred at one of the Resort Hotel/Casinos here in Las Vegas, in which an individual located an object on the roof of his vehicle. Upon moving the object, it exploded and tragically killed the victim.
As a result of this unfortunate incident, I felt it was my obligation to use my newsletter as a training forum, for what to do in the event a suspicious object is located. Please remember this: If you are in a situation that there are unusual circumstances and something doesn't feel right, please trust your gut, be cautious and report any concerns to your Security Department, Supervisor or Law Enforcement Authorities. Do not worry about overreacting. It takes each and every one of us to help keep each other safe. Below are some of the most important things to remember if a suspicious item or object is located:
- A suspicious item should be considered anything which is out of place and can't be accounted for.
- A suspicious item could be an unusual item found in a common area or a very common item found in a location where it normally wouldn't be.
- The item may or may not have visible wires, timers or batteries attached.
- Upon locating a suspicious item, do not touch or attempt to move the object.
- Do not use radios or cellphones within the area of the object. These items could set off the object if it is an explosive.
- Notify Security or your Supervisor Immediately. 911 should be immediately dispatched.
- Evacuate the area and prevent anyone except law enforcement from entering the area.
- As soon as possible, the individual locating the object shall write down everything he or she remembers. Law Enforcement will need this information.
- If security cameras cover the affected area, ensure that all tapes are preserved for law enforcement officials. These tapes will be very important if a crime was committed.
