Seek Justice for all the Good People

In the last 4 years that I have lived in Las Vegas, I have had the opportunity to meet some amazing people. I have been fortunate to have developed some great business relationships and have made really good friends along the way. Las Vegas is a great city of opportunity.... And there are a lot of good business people here; trying to do the right thing and treat their customers with the highest level of integrity. However, there will always be people that choose not to do the right thing and do business unethically or outright scam people out of money.

My most recent newsletter asked for your feedback regarding scam artists and I wanted to hear from people that have been victimized here in town. The response was overwhelming and I appreciate everyone that shared their experiences with me.

A common thread among many of you that have been victimized, was that you had not reported these crimes to the authorities or have not pursued the suspects by suing them. Many of you felt that in some way, it may have been partly your own fault for not knowing better. Many of you also stated that if you did report what happened to you, you were not confident that you would receive justice; that you would just become a victim of the court system!

One story that stands out from the others is a particular advertising scam that is occurring here in town. A publisher of a magazine was not providing services promised to a particular advertiser and she had been scammed out of thousands of dollars. Up to this point, she has chosen not to pursue this scam artist. As you should know, magazines basically pay for themselves due to all the people that pay for advertisements. How many other honest, ethical people do you think may have been scammed by this same individual? How many good people could be helped if one person stands up and pursues this scam artist and puts him out of business?

Everyone.....We must fight back. We are not just fighting for ourselves, but we are standing up for all the other legitimate, honest, ethical people that are just trying to do the right thing.

I ask you.... please, if you have been scammed or victimized, please consider doing the following things:

  • File A Police Report: If you have been victimized and a crime has been committed, report it to your local police department. It is important for you to have it on record what happened to you. By filing a police report, this can be used as evidence if you ever get to present your case in court. In addition, if there are other people that have been victimized by the same person and they also report what happened to them, it helps law enforcement build a stronger case against the individual(s).

  • Contact the Better Business Bureau: This is one of the better sources to learn about complaints against certain companies here in town. If you are searching for a service, wouldn't you want to know of any complaints by consumers? Let's help each other....If you know something about a certain company, don't stay silent. Help others so they won't get into a similar situation. You know that you would appreciate the valuable information.

  • Consider Hiring an Investigator: If you feel that you have been victimized but don't feel there may be enough evidence to prove your case, consider hiring an investigator. A good investigator will thoroughly investigate the facts and determine if it was a misunderstanding and attempt to resolve the issue, or if it is a clear cut scam. By having a licensed investigator on your side, you can get the information you need to pursue the suspects in a court of law.

  • Tell People of Your Experiences: Talk to people about your negative experiences with a person or company. I know that you have heard before that Vegas is a big city, but it is small at the same time; meaning that word spreads like wildfire. Let people know of a bad business experience you have had. If you don't say something, chances are, a good friend, business associate or perhaps a family member might be their next victim.

Friends, Family, Business Associates.... stand up for what is right. Do the right thing and if you have the unfortunate experience of getting involved in a bad business relationship, report it and help prevent others from becoming victimized.
