Prevention Tips - Avoid Being the Victim of A Scam

Have you ever been a victim of a scam? Were there signs that you should have caught, but missed at the time?

You may be reading this newsletter saying to yourself, that you know the signs and that you wouldn't be taken by a scam artist. Although most people say this, people are taken for millions every year, by smooth operators that take advantage of people.

I recently did a speaking engagement, which the topic of the presentation was 'How to protect yourself from scam artists'. An interesting part of the presentation was when I polled the audience as to who had been a victim of a scam in the past. About half the audience (75 people) raised their hands!

I don't believe there can be too much education on this issue. Please share this information with your family and friends so that a lot of heartache and financial loss can be avoided.

The following are prevention tips that you can use to protect yourself from very common scams.

  • Business Opportunities: Beware of business opportunities that appear to have exaggerated claims of possible profits. Research the company to ensure that it is a legitimate company, such as checking with the Better Business Bureau.

  • Identity Scams: Prior to submitting your credit card information for a purchase on a web site, make sure it is reputable business. Never give your credit card number over the phone unless you make the phone call. Monitor your statements every month to review for any fraudulent activity.

  • Investment Scams: If an opportunity seems "too good to be true"......it is. Be cautious of investment opportunities that claim high returns at little or zero risk. Have a professional conduct a background check on all parties involved.

  • Auction Sites: Before bidding on items of interest, contact the seller with any questions you may have. Ensure that you have warranty, refund and return policies. Review the seller's feedback by other people that have bought from them.

Have you been the victim of a scam? Did you have some level of financial loss as a result? I would like to hear from you. Please let me know how you were a victim, what the loss was, and was the suspect caught and charged with a crime?
