Keeping Safe At The Office (Safety & Security Tips)

Due to some recent thefts and break-ins in the community at office buildings, I thought this would be a good opportunity to provide you some tips on security measures for the workplace. Although you cannot totally prevent a crime from occurring, taking these proactive measures will reduce the chances of you and your organization becoming victimized.

  • Secure Your Wallets and Purses In A Locked Drawer: Many of you have done it. You leave your purses or wallets on top of your desk or inside an unlocked drawer or cabinet. There have been several cases recently of criminals walking straight into an office space, walking right past the receptionist and into offices and stealing purses and wallets. Be Safe! Lock them up!

  • Check-in Every Visitor: Make sure you know who is in your building. Make them sign-in and confirm where they are going and verify that they have a scheduled appointment.

  • Lock the Front Door "After Hours": If you or your Team Members are working late, make sure they lock the front door to the office. Also, make sure that their vehicle is close to the office building and parked in a well-lit area.

  • Secure File Information: Secure confidential file information before you leave each evening. This includes locking down your computer. Don't take the risk of someone breaking in to your office and stealing personal/confidential information.

  • Cameras / Panic Buttons: Consider having cameras installed and panic buttons in place. Cameras are especially critical in highly sensitive areas as well as entry-ways and exit-ways.

  • Have Keys In Hand: Before leaving your office for the evening, make sure you have your keys in hand as you are walking to your vehicle. Once getting into your vehicle, immediately lock your doors.

  • Note Any Unusual Activity: If you notice any unusual activity or suspicious people as you are walking to your vehicle, be safe and return to the office. Contact your Security people or at least get another person to walk you to your vehicle. If there is possible criminal activity occurring, contact your local authorities.

With everything you do, it's better to be safe than sorry and take a moment to make sure you are doing everything you can to keep you and your fellow co-workers safe. Why not take a moment and pass this information along to your friends and co-workers. Together, we can help keep each other safe.
